What challenges do institutions face when implementing double and joint degree programmes? What are ECIU partners’ views on the concept of the European Degree and the European Degree Label?
These and other questions are being explored by the team from the International Cooperation Centre of Lodz University of Technology through a qualitative study carried out as part of activities supported by the European Universities Support Programme.
The aim of the study is to identify opportunities and potential barriers related to the implementation of joint forms of education and the awarding of joint qualifications at ECIU partner universities. At the same time, the study seeks to gather comprehensive data on existing models of Flexible Learning Pathways (FLP) and joint/double degree programmes across partner institutions. The findings will contribute to a joint publication showcasing good practices and innovative approaches within the European University alliance. A key reference point is the Higher Education Package announced by the European Commission on 27 March 2024, which focuses, among others, on developing flexible learning pathways, increasing student mobility, and facilitating the recognition of diplomas across Europe.
The study is currently at the stage of intensive study visits to partner universities. The five-member team has already visited 9 out of 11 partner institutions, conducting 23 in-depth interviews with 37 participants, which has resulted in over 20 hours of recordings and 300–400 pages of transcripts. The collected qualitative data will form the basis for a thematic analysis, which will be a key component of the study.
The study will conclude with a publication presenting findings and recommendations on the development of joint forms of education and joint qualifications. The results will also be presented during an international concluding conference at TUL , scheduled for September this year, with the participation of representatives of ECIU partner universities and experts from Poland and abroad.
